Health Support that Starts at the Doorstep

Supporting health and independence through in-home nursing and mobile care.

Staying Home & Staying Well

For many members of the Nlaka’pamux Nation, access to care doesn’t just mean having a clinic nearby. It means being able to receive support right at home. NHSS is working to make sure professional, culturally safe care can come directly to our doorsteps.

Our home-based care approach is grounded in trust, flexibility, and the understanding that people heal better in familiar spaces. It’s about helping people stay where they belong – close to family, land, and community – while still receiving the health services they need.

Health Support that Starts at the Doorstep

Home care with NHSS is striving to continue building relationships, keeping people connected to their culture, and offering support that respects each person’s rhythm, routine, and home life.

Our current and planned in-home care efforts include:

  • Mobile visits for wound care, medication support, and chronic condition monitoring
  • Licensed Practical Nurses and Home Care Aides who deliver care directly to members in their homes
  • Support for Elders with limited mobility or transportation barriers
  • Care for individuals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery
  • Education, client advocacy, health promotion, health plans, and more

We know that some people may not feel comfortable accessing traditional health facilities—or may be unable to. Offering high-quality care at home removes those barriers and provides a more holistic experience.

Caregivers Who Know the Land and the Culture

Delivering care in people’s homes takes more than a good vehicle and a willing nurse. It takes coordination, commitment, and the right mix of training and heart. NHSS is prioritizing hiring and retaining staff who can lead and support mobile and home-based care, including:

  • Community and in-home visits
  • Home care aides for personal support and daily tasks
  • Traditional wellness workers who can provide culturally rooted care in-home
  • Support clients in navigating complex health needs across settings

As outlined in the Strategic Plan, NHSS is also investing in new recruitment partnerships and staff development models, including promoting from within, offering student placements, and supporting specialized training for those interested in community-based and in-home roles.

Why Staying Home Is Sometimes the Best Medicine

There’s a reason we’re investing in this. Across the Nation, community members have voiced the need for services that don’t require travel, don’t come with long waits, and don’t feel rushed or impersonal. In-home nursing services meet those needs while also helping prevent hospitalizations and reduce the stress on families and caregivers.

Some of the benefits of this approach include:

  • Greater comfort and privacy for the client
  • Reduced need for travel or appointment scheduling
  • Early intervention when health issues arise
  • More opportunity for family members to be involved in care
  • The ability to blend traditional healing and home-based health supports

In short, we’re making it easier to stay well—without having to leave home to do it.

Not Just a Home-Care Nursing Program, but a Promise

As we move forward with infrastructure planning, NHSS is building out a long-term model that supports mobile care and home visits as essential – not optional. That includes:

  • Expanding our fleet to support regular, dependable home visits
  • Including in-home care as part of our broader primary care strategy
  • Integrating home nursing services into health planning during emergencies
  • Ensuring coordination between home care, clinic care, and traditional supports

This isn’t a temporary offering. It’s part of how we see the future of care across the Nation.

Support That Honours the Household

When we step into someone’s home, we do so with respect. Respect for the person, the space, and the relationships they’ve built there. Our in-home nursing services are rooted in that principle and in the belief that people deserve care that adapts to them, not the other way around. We’re proud to bring this kind of care to our communities and we’ll keep expanding it so more people can stay well, stay independent, and stay home.
